Ajax is the most compact of the lakeshore municipalities, which keeps most homes within a short drive of the Ajax GO station and Highway 401. The town has kept nearly its entire Lake Ontario shoreline as public parkland and trail. Housing is a mix of post-war bungalows in the south, 1980s and 1990s subdivisions in the centre, and newer townhouse and detached communities north of Taunton Road near Highway 407.
